Churnet Valley Railway is celebrating its 25th anniversary

Churnet Valley Railway, one of Staffordshire's key heritage attractions, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Perfect for couples who love history, the railway dates back to 1992 and the first passenger train was launched in 1996, travelling between Cheddleton and Leekbrook. Gregory Wilson, the managing director, paid thanks to the volunteers: "We've reached this milestone due to the dedication and passion of our volunteers. We have almost 100 active volunteers, and some have been with us since the beginning. Devoting a quarter of a century to anything requires commitment. Our volunteers come rain or shine, and they are the main reason we are here today."

We interviewed Karen Taylor from Cakes by Karen

I began making cakes at a young age for friends and family and helping with the family Christmas cake every year. My favourite and best subjects at school were home economics and art, which helped me with my path towards a decorating course at college. After I had my son in 2004, I decided to set up my business, and it has since gone from strength to strength. I usually make around 70 wedding cakes a year, but this year, I have around 120 booked in.

Blessed with glorious weather, Beth and James celebrated their big day at the gorgeous Broadfield

Beth and James met at a bar in London. "I was studying at university, and James had recently moved there for a graduate scheme," says Beth. "We started chatting to each other, exchanged numbers and then met a week later in Covent Garden. That was in 2013, and we've been together ever since!" James popped the question during a camping trip in May 2018. "We went to the New Forest, and after setting up our tent, we went for a walk in the countryside," shares the bride. "As we were walking along, James stopped, looked at me and asked me to marry him! It was a really big surprise, but I immediately said yes! It was my perfect proposal – just the two of us, the sun was shining, and the area was beautiful. That evening we went to a pub for dinner and had a glass of prosecco by the campfire. It was such a happy weekend and one we will never forget."

Mazaya and Harry planned a last minute celebration at Crumplebury Farm

Mazaya and Harry met at a house party while attending Birmingham University. "We were both sitting on the couch while everyone else was dancing," says Mazaya. "We started talking, and the rest is history. I loved how nice and how passionate he was. I also appreciate that he's very patient and fights for our relationship even though we have so many differences like culture and language." Harry proposed on Tiger Island, Indonesia, on 1st December, 2019. "We spent two days at an eco-resort where most of the rooms have private access to the ocean," shares the bride. "He asked me to marry him while we were chilling outside the room watching the sunset. I guessed that he wanted to propose as we'd talked about getting married a few months before, and he asked me to go away for the weekend, and since he doesn't like travelling, I was a bit suspicious. Regardless, when he kneeled, I cried and, of course, said yes!"

Fall in love with this alternative shoot at Hellens

When these images first landed in our inbox, we just knew our lovely readers would adore them. We spoke to Jenny Morgan from Chocolate Falls to find out more about how this shoot came together: "I've always had a passion for Gothic styling and loved the idea of combining contrasting popular themes to create a slightly alternative but elegant display. A very close friend of mine is a medium and white witch who practices pagan rituals, which I find fascinating, so we merged the two and romanticised it into a wedding setup. I envisaged a shoot where there was a Gothic presence but softened with touches of nature which incorporated the Pagan rituals perfectly. I've built relationships with several suppliers over the years who are all incredibly talented in their particular fields, and each possesses a creative flair which allowed us to showcase our artistic range."

Sarah and James had a magical Christmas-themed wedding at The Upper House

Sarah and James met on a dating website. "On our first date, we arranged to meet at a local pub," says Sarah. "When I got there, 15 minutes late, James was already waiting at a table with a drink. We ended up doing the pub quiz, and I loved the fact he was so easy to talk to and willing to try the quiz and have a laugh at ourselves as we weren't very good at it!" James proposed on the 4th August, 2017. "My birthday was three days later, and I thought we were going for a birthday meal," shares the bride. "We were at Miller & Carter, and after the waitress had taken our order, James said he had a gift for me. He got the ring box out of his pocket and pushed it across the table. James doesn't like being the centre of attention, so he only told me instead of making a scene. I opened the box to find a stunning ring and put it on my finger.

Just a wedding

When Mark Lee from Mark Lee Photography set up this shoot at Cheshire's Park Manor, he wanted to seek out like minded suppliers to collaborate on creating stunning inclusive images; and what better showcase this gorgeous shoot than Pride Month! Mark says, "For months I've been coming across posts on Facebook on issues from the LGBTQ+ community over double standards within the wedding industry. Some finding that they were being charged more or that some suppliers just wouldn't work with a same sex couple. Then a supplier wanted to know how to create a logo for same sex supplier so not to offend. And another supplier unsure how to word his contract... this got me thinking. Why is this so difficult? Why does there need to be an issue regardless of who you are and who you want to marry? The law has changed so why are people still living in the dark ages? It's time to accept everyone."
