Having live background music at a drinks reception can really help set the atmosphere and put people at ease, so that they can feel relaxed while chatting to family and friends. Something non-intrusive and not too loud would allow for conversations to be enjoyed without having to raise voices. I have played the harp at many drinks receptions and found it to be the perfect instrument for setting the scene, while not drowning out normal exchanges between the guests. Amplification can be useful in some circumstances, and all of my harps have electric pick-ups, but unless the number of guests is above 100, I have seldom found it necessary.

To celebrate the nation's love of cheese, as we head into wedding season, Mini Cheddars has brought together two pop icons - Duncan James from Blue and Claire Richards from Steps - in musical matrimony to form the ultimate wedding supergroup - Simply Wed. A poll of 2,000 wedding guests saw Don't Stop Me Now by Queen and Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline complete the top three. The 'big day' playlist also included Happy by Pharrell Williams, Toploader's Dancing in the Moonlight, as well as Mr Brightside by The Killers. Also featured in the top 40 were Single Ladies by Beyonce, 5,6,7,8 by Steps and One Love by Blue.

Staffordshire-based harpist Helen Barley is running a special discount for couples who book her carbon fibre harp. "The harp sounds amazing and is so easy to transport," says Helen. "It makes my life much easier, so I've decided to offer couples their ceremony music for the special price of £200. This includes music for guests to enter and wait, the bride's entrance, a song as part of the ceremony in place of a reading, during the signing of the register and for the exit of the happy couple. It also includes a free home consultation to help you choose your music.

Dayton Grey Music first started in 2013 when Dayton was 32. "I was very shy, hence the late starts," says Dayton. "I initially performed as part of a duo named Domino with my close friend Helen Hale. Considering my shy nature, I was surprised to find myself so at home on stage, and I soon gained confidence! It wasn't long before I added new solo shows A Tribute To The Legends of Soul & Motown, For The Love of Luther (Luther Vandross Tribute) and Old Skool Flava (classic R&B). This month, I debut Ocean Devotion (Billy Ocean Tribute). In 2014, I performed my first wedding as a soloist."

Consider what type of harp you'd like at your wedding as there are many different styles and sizes available. For example, a grand, golden antique option may be used in a large church or stately home, whereas a smaller, more modern version may suit a contemporary setting. Ask your harpist for a consultation either in person or online, so you can discuss their available options. I also advise you hear them perform live before booking. See if they're flexible with timings. Weddings are notoriously difficult to keep to a strict timetable, so if a harpist is booked for two hours, it could be disruptive if they pack up halfway through the dessert.
